Common myths about foodbanks
Despite growing awareness and understanding, there are still misconceptions about foodbanks. Below are some common ones we’ve unpacked.
“People who use foodbanks are unemployed”
A significant number of people accessing foodbanks do work. Even so, low pay and insecure hours can make it impossible to cover basic living costs.
“Foodbanks encourage dependency”
Foodbanks provide short-term, emergency support. At Hornsey Foodbank, and most foodbanks in London, our goal is often to provide stability and dignity during difficult times.
“It’s just about budgeting better”
Many of the people we see are extremely careful with money. When income simply can’t meet essential costs - which Citizens Advice calls being in a negative budget - no amount of budgeting can close that gap.
“Food insecurity doesn’t affect our community”
Food insecurity exists in every postcode, including Hornsey. It affects families, pensioners, students, people with disabilities and working households.
How our community can (and does) respond
Food insecurity is complex, but community action makes a real difference. By donating food or funds (link to Support us page), volunteering time, and raising awareness, local residents help ensure that no one in Hornsey has to face crisis alone.
If you or someone you know needs support, or if you would like to get involved, please reach out to us today. Together, we can build a community where everyone has access to the essentials.
